Did You Know?!

Did You Know?!

The term Etiquette was coined by Louis XIV in the 17th century.
Rumor has it, Louis’s gardener had a problem with the nobility and aristocrats walking about the majestic garden while tromping on the grass.
Complaining to Louis a decree was entered upon and little signs or étiquets were placed about, “Keep off the grass".

Did you know!?

Being a social butterfly is hard work!
So many times at Dinner Parties or social events I am searching for what to say.
Did You Know is a fun way to inform our readers of insightful, amusing and interesting facts, so you don't just have to talk about the weather next time you have a get-together...

DID YOU KNOW that Antarctica is the only land on our planet that is not owned by any country.
Ninety percent of the world's ice covers Antarctica .
This ice also represents seventy percent of all the fresh water in the world.
As strange as it sounds, however, Antarctica is essentially a desert; the average yearly total precipitation is about two inches.
Although covered with ice (all but 0.4% of it is ice.), Antarctica is the driest place on the planet, with an absolute humidity lower than the Gobi desert.

Did You Know, Under the Mistletoe

A great way to stand out at your upcoming
Holiday Dinner Party, is to
speak up with some fun and interesting facts...

Did you know...

that Mistletoe has no roots yet remains green during these cold months of winter...

or that the ancient Celtics believed mistletoe to have magical healing powers and used it as an antidote for poison, infertility, and to ward of evil spirits. The plant was also seen as a symbol of peace, and it is said that among Romans, enemies who met under mistletoe would lay down their weapons and embrace.

Scandanavians associated the plant with Frigga, their goddess of love, and it may be from this that we derive the custom of kissing under the mistletoe.

Happy Holidays Readers!
I hope you have a festive Holiday Dinner Party Season filled with smooches and sweet salutations!

Did You Know?!...

A great way to stand out
at your next Dinner Party, is to speak up with some fun and interesting facts...

With the Olympics upon us, try using one of these surprising nuggets of knowledge ;)

* Gold medals are mostly made of silver.
Despite the popular belief that the Gold Medal is composed of pure gold, this hasn’t been the case since the 1912 Olympics. Today’s Olympic Gold Medal is an impostor, made almost entirely from silver with approximately 6 grams of gold to meet the standard laid out in the Olympic Charter. The London Games medals are the biggest Olympic medals ever, weighing in at 400 grams. With gold selling at $1,571 an ounce, an Olympic medal made of pure gold would cost upwards of $20,000.

*Only three modern Olympic Games have been cancelled.
The games were cancelled due to World War I (1916) and World War II (1940, 1944).

*Only one person has ever won gold medals during the Summer and Winter Olympics.
American Eddie Eagan has this distinction. In 1920, Eagan took home gold in boxing. He later earned a gold medal at the 1932 Lake Placid Games in the team bobsled event.

and finally the best one of all!...

***Athletes in the ancient Olympic Games competed in the nude. ***
In fact, the word “gymnasium” comes from the Greek root “gymnos” meaning nude. As such, the literal translation of gymnasium is “school for naked exercise.”
